The first company
meeting was held on July 29, 1895. On August 6, 1895, the
company's first piece of equipment was purchased, being a hose
cart. On September 23, 1895, a H & L truck (hand drawn) #600
was ordered and delivered on November 20, 1895. In 1896, some
coats and "hoods" were purchased. A single-story
building was erected on the John Trine property to house the
equipment. The incorporation charter was then signed on March 30,
1897. The original firehouse (pictured on the left) was located
on what is now West Pine Street. This building was acquired in
September of 1911. In July, 1962, the present building (pictured
on the right) was purchased at 100 Chestnut Street. This
building at one time was the old Holly School. The present
building contains 6 large bays with the one on the far end being
a drive - through bay. The second floor contains offices, a
lounge, training room, and a bunk room. There is a brass pole
which the firefighters use to reach the apparatus floor from the
bunk room. There are various offices downstairs. Recently
updated, handicap accessible bathrooms were added downstairs.
There is a large kitchen and dining area for our various fund
raising events. Inside the rear of the engine bay is a
communications room. To the rear of the station, behind the bays,
is a kitchen area used for our fair and other outdoor events. The
company meetings are held the third Monday of every month at
19:30.
At the present, our company runs approximately 500 calls / year. Our department has first due area in 10 municipalities covering two counties. We provide ladder truck service to neighboring communities as well as our own. There are several main traffic ways in our first due and neighboring areas. The occupancy of our area consists of small community, several large industries, to rural area including several camp grounds and a state park that we serve. We manage to get several working fires and as well as MVA's requiring extrication, during a year. The department provides initial water rescue services with a boat that was donated. However, the boat has since been sold. Our company has a forestry firefighting strike team that coordinates with the regional forestry service and neighboring companies. The strike team travels across the state to provide it's service where needed. We also assist the Cumberland County Search Team with urban/rural search responses. Included in our responses, usually several times a year, are mountain rescues in the state park area. For many years, the company provided a BLS ambulance service with two ambulances. However, that service is now provided by a local, paid service. We have recently placed an AED into service to assist the local BLS/ALS services responding into our area. We have also purchased some property on Mill Street in hopes of constructing a future social building there. To continue with our effort to provide the best service possible, we have purchased a new rescue/engine to replace one of our 1989 Seagrave engines. The new engine also includes a new rescue tool system to replace the out-of-date system on the Seagrave.
